Look at Alec. Can you see the strength coming from within his heart of gold?
In March 2nd of 2007, Alec was diagnosed with Anaplastic Medulloblastoma, cancer of the brain, at 5 years old. Medulloblastoma is a fast-growing and aggressive type of cancer. Anaplastic equals “poor prognosis”. By the Time Alec Had been diagnosed, cancer had already spread to a couple of spots down his spine.
He had been vomiting for a good 2 weeks – it was considered viral at first.
2 days after diagnosis, Alec had a Spinal tap to check for cancer cells in his CSF – Cerebrospinal fluid. Thankfully, it was negative.
Alec’s Treatment plan is called Head Start II – 2 rounds of chemo, 6 weeks of radiation, 2 more rounds of chemo followed by a stem cell transplant. Despite this treatment being incredibly aggressive and so harsh on Alec, he persisted. In preparation for the stem cell transplant, Alec received a whopping amount of high dose chemo that TOTALLY wiped out his immune system. 1 year of chemo received in just 6 days.
Shortly after being diagnosed, Alec had surgery to remove the tumor, which left him with several deficits.
Hydrocephalus was also an issue, so Alec needed a shunt to drain extra fluid from his brain. Alec is legally blind since he can barely see; He cannot walk properly, chemotherapy also greatly affected Alec’s ability to hear, leaving him needing hearing aids. He also needs aids to eat…
Alec is now 17 years old and thriving, 12 years after diagnosis.
Among countless fevers, mouth sores (Caused by chemo), several surgeries, long ICU and hospital stays, so many obstacles, Alec stands strong. He smiles and inspires.
Go Gray for Alec – He has been through so much and as any child with cancer, he deserved better treatments.
We love you, Alec!
